Mmm… Food

I pick up the first share from the CSA tomorrow.  Got an e-mail today about what will be in it, which already has me surfing the web looking for recipes that call for “green garlic”

 Green Garlic

have you ever heard of such a thing??  Apparently it’s early shoots of garlic before it starts making the big bulbs.  Milder flavor and looks more like a green onion.  Should be interesting.  We are also supposed to get lettuce, spinach, radishes, asparagus, chives, mint, button mushrooms, and our extra this week is a Pear Butter.  mmm…  I’ve been looking for other blogs on experiences with CSA so if you have one or know of one, let me in on it. 🙂  thanx.  The front porch garden continues to get bigger.  we ate some of the lettuce this weekend and it was so fresh and crisp.  The cilantro seedlings are maybe an inch tall and the lime basil is getting ready to grow it’s second set of leaves, but the oregano still looks kind of pathetics.  Like if I breathed too hard, the plants would come flying out the dirt and blow away in the wind.  In my excitement to watch things that I actually planted come up and out the ground I am saddened that I must thin out the number of plants that have poked their heads up.  It must be done this week.

While it’s not using food from the food share,  (Trader Joes makes sure the rest of the food we eat is good for the world) we did try a recipe last nite from a new cookbook I purchased in my excitement to have recipes for the  new foods and new flavors that will be coming into our house .  The recipe was “Asparagus Risotto with Truffle Oil” and it is from the cookbook “Simply Organic: A Cookbook for Sustainable, Seasonal, and Local Ingredients” by Jesse Ziff Cool.   The book is one of NPR’s “The 10 Best Cookbooks for Summer” and so many othe recipes look delicious.  The risotto was delicious and cooked the asparagus to perfection.  Too often asparagus gets limp and overdone, but by adding the asparagus just before the last 1/2 cup of chicken broth was added to the risotto, it came out just dandy.

The food share has enabled us to eat art. This weekend the CSA’s box contained beets that were roasted, mashed into pasta dough, pressed out into lavender squares and filled with goat cheese and ricotta. I have never eaten anything so purple. And delicious. Somebody needs to include the recipes for these good eats!
